Building happiness…one little house a time.

What is the Playhouse Program

The Playhouse Program is a unique volunteer and fundraising opportunity that offers groups a meaningful and creative day, working on the construction of a playhouse that will be donated to a child. The funds raised through this program support the organization's mission in Puerto Rico.

Playhouse School Challenge
Is an annual event where schools come together in a friendly competition to build playhouses and raise funds for Habitat for Humanity of Puerto Rico. Each school selects 10 students to represent them. The purpose of this competition is to create a Playhouse, educating teenagers about the importance of a dignified and safe home, the value of hard work, and the joy of making someone else happy. This event promotes team building, inspires creativity, and strengthens the sense of community in young people, while teaching them about the significance of having a home.

Volunteers Share their Playhouse Program Experiences

Miquel García Rivera, Student, Colegio San Ignacio de Loyola

‘’For me, the playhouse project was a very fun project and a project that helped us improve our manual skills, all this while we were building a playhouse for some little children, which motivated us a lot to do a good job. We learned many manual skills about everyone, we learned to work with wood, hammers, screws, drills, etc. which can help us a lot in the future. For me, what I liked most about the event was the day of building the house because it was a lot of fun, but in addition to having a good time, we all worked as a team to build and paint the house. ’’

Juan Puras, Student,
Colegio San Ignacio de Loyola

‘’The playhouse project seemed like an unforgettable opportunity for us. Most of us have not had the experience of creating and organizing our own fundraiser. We loved being able to help the children and seeing their happy faces when they saw the playhouse. The project was a lot of fun and we learned a lot of useful skills. We learned about carpentry, installing electricity, how to run and organize a fundraiser, and how to use the chainsaw. And we learned how to do all of this safely. The thing we liked most about the event besides building the playhouse was learning about the school to whom we were donating the playhouse, and especially seeing and meeting the children who seemed to be very happy to receive the gift.’’

THE HOME DEPOT

‘’It was a great activity in which our volunteers were able to give something back to the community. Working with the Habitat Foundation was a great experience from the planning, the follow-up and the day of the activity. For many of the volunteers this was their first time, they learned about the Team Depot program and in the workshop they were able to perfect teamwork and painting skills, handling some tools under all the required safety measures. This activity generated a lot of excitement in the participants and also in those who could not participate, but are interested in being able to participate on a future occasion.’’
